Louis MacNeice’s long autobiographical Poem, ‘Autumn Journal’ has had a prominent place on my shelves for more than 50 years now (I was a precocious Poetry devotee).
Today I feature two exquisite shorter poems which demonstrate his technical accomplishment and plangent imagination.
… I am not yet born; provide me
With water to dandle me, grass to grow for me, trees to talk
to me, sky to sing to me, birds and a white light
in the back of my mind to guide me.
And ain’t it the truth ….
It’s no go the merrygoround, it’s no go the rickshaw,
All we want is a limousine and a ticket for the peepshow.
Their knickers are made of crepe-de-chine, their shoes are made of python,
Their halls are lined with tiger rugs and their walls with head of bison.

Many years ago I did a cycling tour around Ireland and, in the middle of nowhere up in Donegal, I pedaled into a B&B to escape the endless rain. The old lady grabbed my arm and pulled me into the lounge room, in front of the fire and I was stunned to see the walls completely covered in gold records. I had stumbled upon the family home Enya and Clannad! My small brush with Irish folk royalty! Take care and have a good day, Mel

Love Mary Black’s voice — so beautiful. Lovely poetry as well. Thanks. A very nice tribute to our exquisite neighbour.

The article at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Colclough
calls “Song for Ireland” a modern classic. Listening to it, I understand why. I also see in the article that June Colclough died in 2004, while Phil Colclough died only this past September. I wonder how long the 15 years felt to him.
