Randy Newman : I Think It’s Going To Rain Today

Some days, some nights, Life can be a struggle.

Seems like Easy is getting Harder every day.

Every day.

High water rising everywhere.

Everywhere.

All the hedges blown down – strewn along the road.

You come naked and crying into the world and that’s how you’ll go out.

You inherit a world of trouble.

Flames rise up to scorch the sky.

Every morning you wonder how you’ll get through the hours until the darkness comes and you can somehow sleep.

Every night you wonder how you’ll get through the hours until you can find the energy to face the light for another day.

Nothing to be done.

Seems like your soul has hardened to steel.

Pale dead Moon.

Not even the murmur of a prayer.

Pink, pink, pink. pink Moon.

Ravens blackening the sky.

High water everywhere.

Scarecrows dressed in the latest styles.

Nothing at the end of the rainbow.

All the women came and went.

Not even the murmur of a prayer.

Two riders.

High water everywhere.

Going down three times.

Coming up twice.

I think it’s going to rain today.

You must say words as long as there are any.

Must go on.

Can’t go on.

Go on.

I  think it’s going to rain today.

  1. Randy Newman is not a bundle of charisma, but his songs make me laugh and lighten my day. I Think It’s Going to Rain Today is more serious but one of my favorites. I loved the theme song fro the TV series Monk – I think it made the series into a hit.

  2. Hmmm. I’d really like to like Randy Newman’s music. I even went to see him play once, many years ago after Short People was released. It was at a venue beside a fair, which drowned him out as he mumbled his way through his set. He had about the charisma of a bar of soap. The tunes all seemed to have the same tempo and the whole evening receded to the depths of my memory. Maybe he’s a better songwriter than I think and I just haven’t given him a fair chance, but he just seems so bored with his own music, it’s difficult for me to get worked up over it.
