  1. Do you remember having “bread and milk” for supper? And something called “mock goose” which I think was one of those wartime recipes. A sort of vegetarian roast. Mum also used to make bacon and onion suet pudding, like a savoury spotted dick, altho I suppose that’s now a non PC term. Maybe “skin challenged penis” nowadays? They were wrapped in an old tea towel and boiled for hours. When unwrapped they had a leathery skin. My gran used to use the leg of her old knickers to wrap them in when she made them!!!

  2. OMG I’d forgotten about sugar sandwiches. My Mum used to make ones for me with condensed milk in them. I also used to be given something called “Double dooce” It was wedges of peeled apple rolled in sugar. I think it was probably “double juice”, the idea being that the sugarmade the apple more palatable. A pee bucket in the bedroom was very common when you lived in an old house with a communal toilet and didn’t want to risk going down the common stair in your night attire. We had a “guzunda” A chins pot which “guzunda” the bed. They were emptied as soon as you got up. It was a comment on your social standing whether or not you covered the pisspot when taking it to empty or left the contents in full view.
Alan Johnson is a great read. I’ve just finished his autobio. He and I literally grew up round the corner from each other although I’m a few years older and can’t remember him. I’ve just posted my recollections on North Kensington Histories http://northkensingtonhistories.wordpress.com/ if you’re interested.

  3. Very interesting read about England in the 50’s. I was born in 1953 in Pensacola Florida and a lot of what you write about is alien to me as an American … sugar sandwich, buckets of urine in the bedroom, etc. I will have to locate Alan Johnson to read, he sounds like an interesting author. My wife and I went to Ireland in 2005 and talked to people my age and times were sure different across the Atlantic! Frank
