  1. Hi Thom just finished reading Alan Johnson’s wonderful memoir of growing up in West London in the 50’s. Here’s a few things to add to the 50’s mix.
    Outside toilets, buckets of urine in bedrooms, bugs in beds, powdered milk, spam fritters, sugar sandwiches, ration books, women fighting in the street, men fighting in the street, lousy schools, the cane, the strap, Oswald Mosley, racists on the street, the murder of black men, alcoholism and last but not least Max Bygraves!

  2. Given we were only 3/4 by the end of the 50s it shows what a powerful legacy it laid out for us, with some vivid memories more easily recalled than the 70/80s! Mind you drink played a part with the latter…..

  3. Hi Thom dusted of the cob webs and added to the mix;

    Who can forget the 6/5 Special with its distinctive theme tune. One of the first attempt by the BBC to bring rock’n’roll to the masses.

    Sunday lunch in Belmont Circle with entertainment from Clitheroe Kid, Life with the Lyons, Goon Show and the Navy Lark to name but a few. I was reminded of the Goon show when based at NSY and visiting the Graftons Pub in Strutton Ground. The pub was owned by the Grafton Family, one member of the family being Goon scriptwriter Jimmy Grafton. The pub was a haunt for many of the Goon stalwarts including Bentine.

    The childhood thrill of steam, riding the rattler from Stanmore to Harrow and Wealdstone.

    Who can forget the inimitable Leonard Sachs who held the audience of the Good Old Days in the palm of his hand as the MC of the very popular Old Time Music Hall TV show. One should not forget that Sachs had a successful film career as well.

    Sunday Night at the London Palladium, one of the most memorable TV variety show began in the mids 50s, the hosts in the early years were Tommy Trinder and a certain. Bruce Forsyth!

    Dixon of Dock Green probably the first British Police series that many still revere today .
